My Dad trained me up to be a bit handy with a toolset and other random utensils. So, armed with a Philips screwdriver, sharp surgical tweezers, and some soft brushes, I attacked the machine.
Gosh, the amount of chalky dust that floated out of the fan - and I pulled out an impressive plug of fluff (offending article?). There was lots more from the keyboard. Three years' worth.
Also amazing: the number of screws holding these things together.
Status: Fan sounds quiet, laptop running well.

I applied for two interesting jobs yesterday. Interesting, as in, not a humdrum office job - I apply to copious numbers of those with dread in my heart. But interesting jobs as in, casting assistant, subtitler, listings writer. Quirky, varied, I want that. Not to wear a suit every day.
And...one of them was in the USA...worth a shot...am I giving up on London? Maybe...
Oh, and a call from a recruiter this morning regarding temp jobs in media/cosmetics/fashion, etc.
Didn't catch it all, but I am going in tomorrow for an interview.
Why do recruiters talksofastonthephone???
I feel left behind, clutching at the ends of their words, asking them to repeat please....
*sigh*

People never realize how much dust in is the air until they crack open a computer!
Also, just imagine how much of the "dust" in the fan/keyboard is actually your dander.
I've always wondered why they don't come fitted with air filters. Fitted all my shop computers with them. Extends the life of the units greatly!

Steli - the job I wanted was actually for live television, and the subtitler uses a voice recognition programme. I will send you the description if I can find it. Quite interesting.
Nice idea with this site its better than most of the rubbish I come across.
