Song of My Heart

Another tag from Selba:

This tag is a nostalgic one which really does bring back the old memories.

Here are the rules:
1. Go to http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/Number-One-Songs-90s.html
2. Pick the year you turned 18
3. Get yourself nostalgic over the songs of the year
4. Write something about how the song affected you
5. Pass it on to 5 more friends

I turned 18 in 1995.
Back then, I paid no attention to current music, preferring to flop on the couch on Friday after school and immerse myself in Beethoven.

However...a few years later, I heard the following song of 1995 (the only one I recognised from the list provided on the website), and thought it touchingly beautiful.

Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman - Bryan Adams

To really love a woman
To understand her - you gotta know her deep inside
Hear every thought - see every dream
And give her wings - when she wants to fly
Then when you find yourself lying helpless in her arms
You know you really love a woman

When you love a woman you tell her
that she's really wanted
When you love a woman you tell her that she's the one
Cuz she needs somebody to tell her
that it's gonna last forever
So tell me have you ever really
- really really ever loved a woman?

To really love a woman
Let her hold you -
till you know how she needs to be touched
You've gotta breathe her - really taste her
Till you can feel her in your blood
And when you can see your unborn children in her eyes
You know you really love a woman

When you love a woman
you tell her that she's really wanted
When you love a woman you tell her that she's the one
Cuz she needs somebody to tell her
that you'll always be together
So tell me have you ever really -
really really ever loved a woman?

You got to give her some faith - hold her tight
A little tenderness - gotta treat her right
She will be there for you, taking good care of you
You really gotta love your woman...

Then when you find yourself lying helpless in her arms
You know you really love a woman
When you love a woman you tell her
that she's really wanted
When you love a woman you tell her that she's the one
Cuz she needs somebody to tell her
that it's gonna last together
So tell me have you ever really
- really really ever loved a woman?

interlude

Just tell me have you ever really,
really, really, ever loved a woman? You got to tell me
Just tell me have you ever really,
really, really, ever loved a woman?

**********

That is really and truly a song for women, and it has a beautiful and seductive Spanish touch.
When I first heard it, the lines that really stood out for me were:

You've gotta breathe her - really taste her
Till you can feel her in your blood
And when you can see your unborn children in her eyes
You know you really love a woman

(I mean....wow...)

**********

I tag...
1) Anyone
2) Who
3) Has
4) The
5) Time

1995 was the year I was pregnant with my daughter. This means that I was miserable for most of the year! That song however, is quite beautiful. :)

Yes. There's something very.....sensual and earthy about the music and the choice of words in that song. Made me want to go to Spain and enrol on a guitar course, just so I could learn the solo. Maybe get a little ear-ring. Chase after women with long dark hair. Maybe get slapped in the face a few times.
It's also a song that reaffirms the knowledge, deep in my bones, that this isn't the geographical latitude I belong at. This isn't a climate that brings out sensuality and earthiness. *looks out at the rain*
....
But yes, "when you can see your unborn children" is a beautiful line.
....
As for playing the game myself....
I'm afraid I'll pass. That kind of nostalgia takes me back to some bad emotions that only belong back there. I'd rather belong here: it's more fun.

1995...hmmm...I had already been in Japan a few years and was almost totally out of touch with Western pop culture. I don't even remember what was popular then.

That was the year that I bought my first PC, i.e. it was the beginning of the end.

This is a very romantic song indeed! :)

Thanks for doing the tag!

I'm goign to spoil the general mood here and say that nothing at number 1 that year induced anything in me but a desire to vomit lol! I was a verk anti-pop 18 year old I'm afraid!

How about 1977, the year of my birth? Hotel California! lol

That song really says it all, doesn't it?

Wow! Seeing your unborn child in her eyes ... I guess it can't get more intimate than that, huh?

Hiya Olivia! How's my sweet friend doing? Lulu says hi!

LB - really? I don't think I've seen that movie.

Beenzzz - swoony beautiful, isn't it?

***

Mike - no, no leave off the earring, unless you want to stereotype yourself into the type that...does get slapped in the face....yeah.

No, despite your northern "aye that be greet" persona, I suppose you lived in Cyprus too long not to have the Mediterranean seep into your bones.

***

Minstrel - hehe, bought your first PC eh?
Geek me! We got ours in 1987!

As I said before, I knew little about the pop culture of 1995. I was in my senior year, busy being an honor student.

***

Selba - you're welcome :) thanks for tagging me. I will always do my best.

***

Matt - you cheery bugger. I know another blogger you'd like to meet, you two could Grump for England.

so what did you listen to when you were 18. You're going to scare me, aren't you?

***

ML - it does, certainly, for us sensitive, romantic, soft-hearted women...*sigh*

***

Dan - heyyy! I am doing pretty well today, thanks. I was...Well it's technically Tuesday now. Cripes, I have to go to bed!

Good to see you back.

(Cripes???)

Just noticed I haven't got the word code anymore. I wonder what happened to it. Ah well, I didn't like it anyway.

Only, if I get spammed, it's coming right back.

Nice romantic choice. The line "And when you can see your unborn children in her eyes" would scare the hell out of most guys!

'Liv - the word code has been dropped if you are cmmenting on your own blog and are logged in ;)

Stuff when I was 18?..... Lots of Metal and ropey Goth and Punk stuff I think, as well as some classical music though I couldn't tell you what lol!

Hi Olivia, I haven't commented on your blog for a while. It is just that I don't have much to say and you say it all so well.

I love that song as well, and I can't believe I've never noticed that line "...And when you can see your unborn children in her eyes."

That is a beautiful song indeed, the lyrics would make any woman melt! Another great song written for a woman would be Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man". But I digress. Will go check the site now.
