Quarter Apple Left

Sunday in NYC with Vanessa and we met up with Vera again at Columbus Circle.

Two fruitcakes in knitted clothing who were informing the public of "them" ripping us all off.
St Patrick's Cathedral
Columbus Circle from inside the Times Warner Center, a very snazzy shopping mall
A jade horse in the window of a Chinese luxury goods shop

A quad of art deco buildings on 5th Ave near Rockefeller Centre, another of NYC's many concessions to internationalism. Clockwise from top left: La Maison Francaise, British Empire House, Italia House, and one unassigned glass sculpture by an Italian artist.

Clockwise from top left: Art deco Atlas near the Rockefeller Center
A sumptuous Subway station where we said farewell to Vera
Passing by St Pat's again
Vanessa, before taking a pic of me at Rockefeller, played camera wars with another tourist

Rockefeller and more flags than I've ever seen in one place
The facade of the GE building (ex RCA) opposite the flags
GE building is so tall my camera was near the ground and I still couldn't get the top
And finally, moi

We took the subway to the UN near the eastern tip of Manhattan.
From opposite the UN you can see the top of the Chrysler building
A zoom on both buildings

Grand Central Station - such grandeur to house such utility
Vanessa and me on Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport
Old rowhouse at the seaport, in front of the Brooklyn Bridge
More sailor rowhouses at the seaport - shops and a museum

Pier 17 at South Street Seaport
Helen McAllister (1931) in dock
Peking (1911) in front of the Pier 17 Mall
View of city between the masts

Fabulous. No wonder my cousin Lis loves NY. Olivia, you've made it look all shiny and artsy and exciting.

The movies do the place an injustice, they somehow make it look grimy and sleazy...and I know it's stupid of me, I know they do this because of the plot, etc etc...but their grimy images do stick.

Oooh, I want that jade horse!

LB - really? What do they say?

GG - Oh man gal, it is indeed shiny and artsy and exciting. As much as I love to big it up, I must be realistic. OK, yes, for a big city and in comparison to London, it is amazingly clean, but maybe that's because it's so much larger and maybe a smaller population - also people drop less on the floor and they don't spit in public as much or leave crap in the subway carriages. There are garbage bags piled by the edge of the sidewalk every afternoon, but the sidewalks are so wide you don't have to step over them as you do in London. Maybe in the middle of winter, with the traffic and the trash and the walkers, it does get all grimy...
OK, Also, if you come from a picturesque small town, NYC will be grimy and the people gruff - that was my impression of it when visiting from The Woodlands. But a few years in London have changed all that.

Sounds, and looks like such an amazing few days, brilliant pics too. I love St Patrick's cathedral - it's everything I love about American Architecture, the way that old cathedral stands next to all the other different styles, it shows like a cross section of the city through time.

Pete Pieces - it was overwhelming, the beauty of mere office buildings even. "There is beauty, even in the corners" was a phrase that slipped out of my mouth on my next to last day there.

Memoria - where have you been? You're not on MSN or Yahoo anymore! How is your mom?

Hey, would you believe I am 10 lbs heavier than Vanessa though?
And when I saw my closeup on the ferry, for the first time I said I was beginning to look a bit older...

Amit - let me refer you to my Webshots album further down the page, which has them in full scale glory.

***

Red Soul - thanks! I saw nearly everything I meant to. Some of my friends there tell me I know it better than they do, now.

I think the millions of slides of art history and artifacts may have influenced my eye. I see things differently now.

***

Amit2 - I've been back in London for ages! But I aim to return to NYC ASAP.

These are wondeful photos! I wished I had time to make it to the pier. Man, next time I go back, it had better be for a week or more! Loved St. Pats!

It just keeps getting classier and classier. This is terrible. You're damaging my prejudice against large cities, m'lady!

Looks like you've been having some great times - but you know it's back to the grind now! Hope your London life doesn't seem mundane after all that excitement!

What a wealth of things to photograph! Thanks for the mini tour. Wish I could have been there with you. I love that you know what everything IS.

Absolutely GORGEOUS pictures! What life, what bustling energy and cool architecture New York has and you've captured it so well! Glad you included pictures of you too!

Crumbs! I haven't replied to any of you!

Beenz - I hope you do go back. I never thought it was one of those places, but now it seems it is...!

***

Minstrel - Mission Accomplished! :P

***

Vanessa - so are you wearing that hat in Houston???

***

Memoria - ok, but sadly I am not online as much these days, don't know why.

***

Cafe - ummm don't even get me started on London!

***

Nikki - my goodness, that would have been fun, but I am sure you would have had flower withdrawals after a day or two ;)

***

Jahooni - I want to go back NOW.

***

Lotus - I was totally blown away by the architecture, the art in the streets...wow. By the way, when I travel there are very few pics of me because I'm always snapping away and rarely think to ask my friends "Hey can you take a pic of ME?"

olivia, you look fantastic! i love your hair. you look young... not that you're not... but like 20. aaahhhh.... now only if i could look 20 in my photos!! ;)

i love these pics. the two freaks look interesting. i'd love, i'll say again, to go there. one day, i hope.

Olivia said...

Um Naief - hey there, latecomer :P

You made me laugh because when I saw the closeup of me on the ferry, for the first time ever I realised, I am beginning to age (those leetle lines around my eyes!)

I wonder things like, how long did it take the freaks to knit their long coats, and why? Also, the long strands down their backs are dreadlocks encased in plastic tubing. I've never seen anything like it.
